When I purchased this dress I wasn’t sold on it. I was shopping specifically for an occasion dress and I couldn’t get happy with anything. I shopped Dress Barn on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised by the selection, I got this dress and a pair of Palazzo pants( my first pair, coming to a blog post near you!).
Usually I have a hard and fast rule about shopping. If I don’t LOVE it and instantly want to put it on and wear it out of the store then its not coming home with me. This dress made the cut because I KNEW I had accessories that would make this dress an OUTFIT.
When you are a curvy girl, you need to invest in a fashion uniform. Shop for good quality basics and then mix in fun trendy pieces and accessories. That way your wardrobe fits you, and you are never without SOMETHING that is going to work for your body OR be able to make something work for your body(through accessories), like this dress.
The dress on its own is ALRIGHT, but with the right jewelry, purse and shoes its ADORABLE! Do you ever buy something with the intention of letting the accessories make the outfit?
Joggers, have you tried them? Let me tell you RIGHT NOW that this new trend is AMAZEBALLS.
Now you may be thinking Anne what the hell is a “Jogger?” Joggers are pants that are gathered at the hem (Like your Grandpas sweatpants). Except NOW they aren’t just sweatpants, they come in a million different patterns and styles. They are effortlessly on trend and are insanely comfortable. Be prepared to get some comments from the men in your life (my older brother had something to say, and Keith had an opinion) on these pants. My answer to their comments was…I don’t dress for you, I dress for myself. AND today MYSELF wore these pants. 🙂
This particular pair came from ASOS Curve, and I seriously wear them EVERY time they are clean. I have worn them with sandals, wedges, and moccasins. I have worn them with a black shirt, white shirt, chambray. I have worn them with tons of jewlery, just the basics or none at all. I wear them hair up, hair down, hair dirty, or hair brown (just kidding on that last part). I think I just had a Dr. Seuss moment haha.
This weekend Keith and I went to a family wedding just north of Cincinnati OH in a little town called Hamilton. We left Saturday morning and knew that we were going to take our time getting down to the wedding because we love a road trip. We live just north west of Ann Arbor MI, so the drive was going to be a solid 4 hours for us. The only stop that I had planned was one at the Cincinnati Premium Outlets (P.S. You should ALWAYS stop at an outlet when on a road trip). We were leaving the rest of our little adventures up to a whim.
Big shock that my husband wanted to stop at Cabelas (which is only a 45 minute drive from our home). I was down to go look around, so we went for it. It is widely known in our area that this store is a BIG draw for tourists. So it can be fun to go and see all the displays and aquariums that they have in the store, NOT to mention the clothes and shoes!
This is part of a GIANT display of animals at the center of the store. They call the display “Conservation Mountain.”
Coming up in just a few short months I will be traveling to the West Coast (LA, Monterray, San Francisco, Telluride) for sometime. This vacation is going to be a VERY physically active one, and I have been internet stalking quite a few items for sometime. LUCKILY for me Cabelas carried what I was looking for, and I was able to make some purchases towards my vacation wardrobe!
Lets talk hiking clothes for the girl in between. I have been searching high and low for the right hiking apparel for about a month, I have been really trying to get settled on my fashion uniform for this trip. What is a fashion uniform you ask? A fashion uniform is when you wear or pack similar clothing styles so that you have A. Lots of mix and match choices and B. One look that does vary but the same central style pieces stay consistent. For the girl in between, a fashion uniform is a GOOD thing. It means that you know what works for you and you have a sense of how to dress yourself comfortably and appropriately.
Ok back to my trip. I KNOW that I am going to be walking/hiking ALOT, so I have been looking for bottoms, a rain jacket, hiking boots, and a rugged bag. I have almost ordered all of these items multiple times, but I just couldn’t make myself pull the trigger. ENTER Cabelas a dropped in my lap opportunity to try these items, and buy some items to break the ice and get me going. I tried, a dress, cropped leggings, and two pairs of shorts to start. ALL of which I would have gladly taken home with me. BUT my need for bottoms was not that great so I only purchased one pair of shorts.
1. The quality and the warrantee on any of their products is fantastic.
2. They are a basic black short, which fits my fashion uniform for the trip.
3. People in Michigan are OBSESSED with anything North Face.
4. This company carries up to a size XL which is me so, they actually FIT!
As I was walking out of the hiking section I noticed some summer rain jackets. I grabbed the Columbia Switchback II jacket and walked out. Sometimes you just have to grab and go! I got the pink which is very fitting for me, and I grabbed the size XL, I threw it on in the parking lot and it was a perfect fit! Enough room for layers but not so baggy that I couldn’t wear it on its own.
When we stopped at the Outlets, I had a specific plan to shop for Fathers day gifts, what I didn’t plan on was the Columbia store. I was able to price check my rain jacket (I got a great deal!) and shop around for more active bottoms. I had been thinking for awhile that I would like to try out an active skirt, and at Columbia they had a wide array to choose from. I ended up purchasing a black basic skort, that will work for everyday wear and light hiking (YAY me!).
Lets talk about why everyone should own a classic maxi that is the perfect fit. Being the curvy girl in between, I STRUGGLE to find maxi dresses that fit. They are to tight around the booty, they are to short, the neckline isn’t flattering…blah, blah, blah. I searched HIGH AND LOW to find a dress that fit the requirements of the curvy girl in between.
Requirements for the perfect maxi for summer-
1. Must be a light fabric.
2. Must have a fitted/defined waist.
3. Must be loose and flowy(everywhere else besides the waist). I want that Princess effect.
4. Must be a fun print or color…
Enter my chance encounter with the PERFECT maxi dress last summer. Weeks before a family wedding, I breezed into LOFT to shop around for a dress to wear. I instantly spotted the sister dress to the one shown here in the pictures. This dress fit my requirements to a T and honestly changed the way I looked at maxi dresses. I was so delighted to have found this dress that I grabbed it up and wore every week and to every function for the rest of the summer.
Then this spring I popped over to the LOFT website just to see what they had hanging around on their spring/summer line. AND this dress popped up. I seriously freaked the efffff out. The same exact dress but with a bolder print. Heaven on earth, I had to have it in my life. I have since then been wearing this dress to everything I can. In fact I will be wearing it to a wedding this weekend. I think the dress has been sold out because its AMAZING but I will keep you posted if it pops up again. BECAUSE you know I will be buying another.
I love a bold print and this dress does not disappoint, I have chosen to utilize red, white and blue once again because A. Merica, and B. These colors work on me. They are a solid fall back for me when I am struggling to make something work.
I know I need a spray tan like its my job right now, but it hasn’t happened yet.
I picked up this hat at Marshall’s one day before a Kentucky Derby party to wear with this dress, and I find myself grabbing it all the time, a hat is a great way to top off an outfit or add a little something extra. I believe I paid 12 bucks for this beauty AND its SPF 50!
Today was a big day for Curls and Contours! I had my first photoshoot with a dear friend showcasing some outfits that work for the curvy girl in-between. Let me tell you how freaking weird it was to have my photo taken. I went through my closet and pulled my current faves to create a bank of photos to feature here on my fabulous blog. I mean seriously, I am like “Hey, I don’t know about hands or standing.” Not cute… Luckily my totally adorable friend Michele of “ME Promotions” was able to give me some pointers on how to look like a human.
Ok moving on, lets talk about why this outfit is A. Ok for curvy girls to wear. And B. How to pull off boots in June. And C. ‘Merica!
The dress is from a little boutique that I started following on Social Media. You have probably heard of it, Pink Coconut Boutique? This was my first time ordering from them and I am very pleased with the result. I did have this dress tailored to fit my specific needs (which I highly recommend to all women) but that is a different post for a different day. What I happen to really like about PCB is that they have different REAL girls modeling their clothing for the site. AND they list their sizes so you can actually get a feel for how its going to look on you.
I know this little number is SHORT, for that reason I chose to pair this dress with some classic cowboy boots. The boots height has a balancing effect on the whole look, I am featuring and showing my legs but letting the boots do the walking (I crack myself up). These particular babes are from Tony Lama, let me tell you they are comfortable. I have MANY pairs of cowboy boots from all the popular brands. But these beauties are kept from the mud and the muck at the barn and used only for concerts and fashion purposes. Follow me on insta (Curlsandcontours) for more pictures of these beauties out and about on me.
HEYYYY….My Fitbit made it into the photo because I am obsessed with my steps. My bag | Miche (last year), watch | Michael Kors, bracelet | David Yurman, ring | Charming Charlies.
Oh and C.”Merica, bag and boots…My go to for festivals and concerts!
Ok ladies, last week I decided that I needed to mix it up with my nails. I have for years been the classic rounded natural nail.
Anyways…Last week, I decided that I was in fact going to try that pointed nail look. I seriously was soooo nervous about it, “Oh my god, once I do it I can never go back” blah, blah, blah. But I got myself a new nail file and went ahead and filed those suckers to DEATH…seriously my leggings were covered in my own nail dust (gross). Then I thought actually stiletto is a little harsh, my nails are more like almonds. I rocked that almond look for a whole three days…Then I thought, you know what. Lady GaGa isn’t the only one that can rock some pointy ass dagger nails. So last night I went to filing, and you know what is totally adorable and chic? Stiletto nails.
So here is what I did, and how I did it. I got a NEW (thats right, big spender) nail file. I then just started working the nail file on the sides of each nail, creating a straight edge. I switched back and forth on either side of the nail bed, until I had worked the nail to a point. From there I painted my nails(Essie Muchi, Muchi), and scratched my husbands head for him…haha
They are not perfect, but neither am I. Adorable for now, its easy to do and very chic!
