Raise your hand if you are a Target shopper! These days Target has become an institution for all things trendy, and it makes me so happy in my heart that they also apply so much thought to their plus size offerings!
I was shopping in my local Target a few weeks ago and was stopped in my tracks by this dress! The colors are so fricking vibrant and fresh. Side note- the photos on the Target website DO NOT do this piece justice. If you have been reading my blog for very long then you know that I gravitate towards one wonderful color(black). Its not very often that I get super excited about a bright floral dress, but this one just screams “WEAR ME ON A FALL DAY!!”
So let me paint this picture for you, hear I am giddily snapchatting my besties from this fitting room about this dress, we collectively decide its a keeper and by chance the fitting room is right next to the shoe section. Thats when I spotted these leopard booties, I MEAN COME ON. They are adorable, and just a little bit to much which is exactly what I like. Pattern mixing is always a yes for me, so naturally its leopard booties and floral dress. I love this outfit combo for an elevated weekend look.
I have been chatting up dark florals for Fall a bunch lately BUT this dress gets me out of the fashion corners that I back myself into. Lets talk about how to style this piece different ways. I will link the options below. 🙂
This dress is such a statement piece, with a small cold shoulder and higher neckline its very modest. So I would play up the sexy factor with some awesome strappy sandals and a masculine clutch.
The cold shoulder detail on this dress is very understated, but if you are concerned a denim jacket would pair so well with the coloring on this garment. I would grab some nude flats and be out the door.
Target has so many beautiful pieces right now in plus and regular sizes. I have even been finding home stuff lately that I just can’t leave the store without!!
I am so excited to share one of my favorite brands with you today!! Universal Standard is chic plus size start up that is based in New York. My blogger bestie Liz from the blog With Wonder and Whimsy visited the Universal Standard showroom while we were in NYC for Full Figured Fashion Week. I knew from following them on Instagram that this was a line that I LOVED. While we were there I purchased their most talked about garment the Geneva dress, and Universal Standard gifted me the Katy dress for this post.
When I sat down to put this post together for you, I couldn’t decide how to frame it out. This is a brand that I really love and wear a lot, so I decided to share my 5 favorite things about Universal Standard with you.
1. Universal Standard pieces are not “fast fashion” each piece is designed to stand the test of time and always be in style. From the quality of the fabrics used, to the design of each piece. I styled the Katy dress with some OTK boots and a leopard clutch, this piece is versatile it could be styled up to take me to a wedding, or slipped into with some booties to head off to work for the day. As a plus size women I have been conditioned to shop “watered down” trends that eventually come in plus sizes. Universal Standard is creating pieces that will always be chic no matter what.
2. Ladies….Universal Standard offers a sizing guarantee. They call it Universal Fit Liberty, and its amazing. Here’s how it works. When a piece from their core collection no longer fits you can return it to U.S. within a year for a completely new garment in your current size. Honestly, when we visited the Universal Standard showroom and learned about this service I was blown away. This is how I like to think about it, and you can’t tell me you have never been there.
Let me take you back, to a 23 year old Anne, I am at home trying to fit into yet another pair of skinny jeans that are now just to small. I am standing in my room crying, how I could I do this, what a waste, I am so fat now, I have nothing to wear. I had no fit guarantee, I had my own self hatred and loathing to fuel yet another yoyo diet that got me nowhere. The Universal Fit Liberty is like a comforting hug to any plus size women. To me its a reminder that I am good enough, I am allowed to have clothing that fits, and I am allowed to love myself at any size.
3. Their clothing is made for the minimalist chic women in all of us. You know she is in there, hiding in that part of your soul that craves chanel bags, and all black everything. That ultra chic girl that throws on a paper sac and looks like a Hadid sister. THAT girl, she lives in me too, and dictates most of my handbag purchases LOL. Universal Standard creates pieces that let that girl come out. The one that can command the boardroom, walk the catwalk(or sidewalk lol), and order extra dessert at dinner. When I wear my U.S. pieces I feel that I can take on the world. There is something so empowering about wearing a garment that has so much thought behind it. There’s almost a pride to it, a confidence in knowing that you are a part of something that is changing the way the fashion industry thinks about plus size bodies.
4. Can we please have a moment of silence for the…Crepe Fabric. Plus size or not you have not loved how a garment feels until you have worn a satin back crepe. The weight is perfect, the way it feels against your skin, and the luxury is next level nice. So nice in fact that Universal Standard offers many of their pieces in the Crepe fabric. Don’t worry girls, I will be linking them, HERE,HERE, HERE and HERE.
5. Universal Standard pieces aren’t for other people, they are for Y O U. This isn’t a brand that is going to create pieces to make other people feel comfortable being around a plus size person, this is brand that creates clothing that isn’t meant to hide/cover/shame a plus size person for having a body. This is brand that celebrates the women that wear their clothing, if you want to rock a sheer dress, DO IT. If you have always wanted to wear a leather top, WEAR IT.
I am so blessed to be able to collaborate with Universal Standard, I am such a huge fan of this brand and their esthetic. Liz and I loved visiting the showroom, if you have a NYC trip planned or are a resident of the city, get yourself over to U.S. stat!

This post contains gifted product from a Maurices loves teachers campaign I did a few weeks ago. All opinions are my own!
Happy Monday! This week is a crazy one for me, I have so much to do and not enough time to do it!! But I wanted to pop on to share a couple of easy Fall looks from Maurices. I know I am always introducing you to new brands, and different ways to style pieces. In this post I wanted to share a couple of looks from one of my favorite plus size store, Maurices!!
I literally have a Maurices 5 minutes down the road from me. I pop in there pretty regularly to check out their inventory and see if there is anything I have to have. On my last trip in I scooped up a pretty little dress that is perfect for transitioning to fall. I participated in the Maurices loves teachers campaign on Instagram, and selected the jacket, skinnies, booties, and tee. Now that I have a little bit of free space on C&C I HAD to share the details with you.
I have such a love for black clothing, I love how easy it is to wear, how cool it makes me feel, and how it serves as an excellent backdrop for other pieces. I styled this fall look so that the jacket would pop off a basic black canvas, this chestnut jacket is really versatile, it can easily blend in with a pair of light wash skinnies, and a white tee(which I have worn) or it can serve as a statement piece with black garments to complement it.
I ordered my usual size in these skinnies and they fit but were really tight, so I would suggest sizing up, I don’t know if it was the pull on that made them fit different vs a traditional pant but they were really fitted. The color saturation on these is really intense, I could easily pair these with a dressier top and some loafers for an office look.
The tee is from their 24/7 collection, which has been my favorite tee collection for years. The material is so soft, the pieces are cut to hang really nicely, but not look baggy and most of the tees can be worn with leggings!! I have been wearing Maurices 24/7 tees since before Curls and Contours was even started. I could go on and on and on about them LOL. They are available in both straight and plus sizes too!!
I scooped this dress up when I was in to exchange some shoes and its my favorite for this September heat wave. The material is SUPER light and easy to wear, and the colors are just right for Fall. I paired it with a jean jacket and open toe booties the other day and it was beyond cute!!
My TOMS booties are like 4 years old, but I could resist their classic fall look with this dress. I would love to style this piece with some cowboy boots and chambray tied around my waist.
I love that Maurices offers plus size and straight size clothing in the same store, that way you can shop with your girlfriends and really enjoy the fitting room experience. If you are shopping alone(like me most of the time) enlist on of their stylists to help you, I have become friends with all the girls at my local store, I know I can shop alone with confidence because I will still get the conversation and clothes talk that I need. 🙂
This post contains gifted items from a different campaign with Maurices. All opinions are my own
Its the first day of FALLLLLL, my favorite season. Almost all my favorite things happen in the fall, my wedding anniversary, halloween, pumpkin spice lattes. You get the picture :). This month for my Kiyonna review I wanted to try out one of their new Kimonos, Kiyonna is known for creating quality pieces for the plus size woman that are meant to last. This trendy piece is no different, the quality really shows.
This Kimono comes in two different patterns a black print and a brown print. This topper is a polyester blend with lace detail along the sleeves and hemline. Its fitted with a belt that you can remove or tie around you waist. I have worn this piece both ways, and have really enjoyed the belt option as a fitted look. I am 5’6″ and the kimono hit me mid thigh, this is enough coverage to keep me feeling confident but not drowning in fabric. Something I would like to highlight is the fabric choice for this garment, its super light and anti wrinkle, I have other kimonos that are a rayon blend, they are so prone to wrinkle and are heavy on warmer days.
The pajama streetwear trend is all the rage this season, and while this trend may seem a little out of reach for the plus size babe pieces like the kimono make this easy to try. I love the edgy looks and trends that come off the runway at NYFW but sometimes those don’t translate to the everyday girl, and often times they aren’t even offered for the plus size girl. Kiyonna has created a piece that speaks to the edgier girl that still wants accessible fashion.
I opted to style this piece with skinnies and a fitted black tank, I wanted to offset the loose fit of the kimono with fitted jeans and a tank. This creates balance and lets the kimono really shine.
I have reviewed some really beautiful pieces for Kiyonna, each piece shines in its own special way. What I really enjoy about this Kiyonna garment is the versatility. I have already worn this with leggings and a blouse, and plan on styling it with some over the knee boots(as soon as this heat gives up).
As a plus size person, I used to be an outsider in fancy little boutiques that dot downtown areas across America. I would go in with the attitude that everything was going to be too small, and therefore irrelevant to me. I was so used to shopping in big chain stores that I didn’t know what I was missing out on.
It wasn’t until I was able to start shopping at boutiques that carried clothes in my size, did I realize how much a boutique shopping experience can benefit you. When shopping in a locally owned store you are able to really get to know the products because the sales staff will be much more knowledgeable about the clothing in the store. This can be for a couple of reasons, less inventory(which is not a bad thing) and likely the person helping you pick an item or style a look had a hand in that item coming to the store. A true boutique shopping experience is born out of customer service and the consumer(thats you and me) being able to connect with the product being sold.
Boutiques are what the owner makes it, and most shops are started because of a passion for whatever is being sold in the store. Thats what makes it so fun, each store is a reflection of the woman that loved fashion enough to start a business, maybe she loves vintage inspired pieces and wants to share them with you. Or maybe she loves denim and wants her customer to be able to experience quality jeans.
Whatever the reason, shopping a boutique that specializes in a niche that you love is a special experience. You will be able to find unique pieces, get help from a sales associate that truly knows the products, and support a local business that is likely owned by a female entrepreneur(girl power!).
If you have been following me for awhile then you know that I am a shopper. And being a plus size woman, most of my shopping consists of ordering from online retailers. And don’t get me wrong I love my online shops, but when it comes to buying statement pieces sometimes you need to try it on first, so you can adjust sizes, see if it will fit the way you think etc…
One of my go to boutiques in the Detroit area is Liz Louize, this is a plus size boutique with a special talent for keeping quality statement pieces in stock. Remember that blog post I wrote about how I always find the best pieces right before we leave? Yeeeahhh this was one of those skirts. I found this 20 dollar beauty on my way to the checkout lane, LOL. Pleats, and lace, ANNNDDDDD its black my favorite color! I wanted to style it in an elevated chic way, so I paired this lingerie-esque skirt with a velvet top and my favorite leopard clutch.
On my last trip to the store I found a Joseph Ribkoff top that I couldn’t resist, I love the soft white top with lace statement sleeves. This piece is so feminine, I styled it with a pair of black strappy heels and some ripped Good American jeans. I wanted to balance the feminine top with some edgier jeans and my favorite Target heels.
I never would have ordered these pieces from an online store, I would have passed right by both. But being able to shop in a boutique and feel the fabrics and see the drama these pieces bring firsthand had me purchasing both.
This past week I had the pleasure of attending an influencer event at the D-Tour Spa at Motor City Casino and Hotel in Detroit. It was so fabulous to have an afternoon of pampering at the spa, then my blogger bestie Liz (withwonderandwhimsy.com) and I stayed over night at the hotel for a girls night out! We took some photos with our phones and some with the camera, so excuse the photo quality. 🙂
My mani pedi was in a private room, with motown music playing softly in the background. My nail tech was super knowledgeable about nails and trends, we spent pretty much the entire time chatting about plus size trends and store we liked to shop at. I went with a classic OPI Red color, and enjoyed the massage chair while I got my toes painted. My favorite part of a manicure is the hand massage, and the D Tour Spa manicure did not disappoint. My hands and feet were in perfect condition when I left for my next service.
I usually only get a massage when my back is in distress. In college I was getting tension headaches at least once a month, and would go get my neck worked on. Now that I am not stressed from school, I don’t get headaches anymore so I don’t get massages. I used to only associate massage with pain, because of all the problems I was having. Now I can say that I have a completely different view.
The D Tour Spa had me in for a special treat. My massage therapist was like a magician, she found knots in my back that I didn’t even know existed, it was so relaxing to just be able to get a massage, listen to some calming music and know that I was doing something really good for my body.
After my services D Tour had some dinner options for us, I was able to meet some new blogger friends and have a healthy post spa meal. My mom and I were chatting the next day about all that spa’s in general offer and how most people do not utilize everything. I loved chatting with the other bloggers in the lounge area, I didn’t have time to utilize the steam room and whirlpool but next time I will be!
I would come back to the D Tour spa again, it was such a relaxing and pampering experience. Everything felt so upscale and luxurious, as a busy working women I don’t give myself enough opportunities to enjoy a relaxing day. The D Tour event was a reminder that I need to take more time to treat myself.

After we left the spa, we got ready for a girls night out. Liz and I both rocked a sexy black outfit. I wore a Vince Camuto dress from THIS blog post. Liz rocked her ASOS jumpsuit that I love!!
After going to New York for a week with Liz, I knew she would want to go up to the Iridescence for some oysters and the cheese plate (not pictured Squash Blossoms that were amazing). Honestly ladies, I felt so Sex and The City with my pomegranate cosmo in my black body con dress. lol.
We stayed in a lovely double room on the executive level, with a great view of the city. Something that I really loved was the bathroom!!! It was gorgeous, the shower and tub were a dream.
We had a state of the art TV, and when we were getting ready the night before I was able to hook my phone up to a in room speaker so we could listen to some Motown. What I really appreciated about this space was the quality linens, the decor, and the view.
We popped up the the 14th floor the next day and grabbed some complimentary breakfast and coffee to take back to the room.
This week on Curls and Contours I am partnering with HIPS Resale boutique to share 3 ways to get the most out of your resale shopping experience! I am also sharing 3 outfits featuring pieces from HIPS Resale Boutique!
HIPS Resale boutique is a resale shop that specializes in plus size clothing sizes 12-32, there are two locations in the metro Detroit area and they pay customers cash for their clothes! I have a big closet, and HIPS is my main source for selling clothes. Its fun to drop clothes off because I can do some shopping too!
Curated resale shops have become all the rage lately, you can find resale shops that specializes in niche items popping up everywhere. Its no surprise that a quality plus only resale shop would be successful and a place for curvy babes to find new pieces at inexpensive prices!
I found the looks in this post at the Clawson location, this little boutique is organized by type of garment, and each garment rack is organized by size. I loved the fun music, and the sales associates were inviting and relaxed, helping me when I needed it.
Here are some tips for a girl that loves to shop. From resale to high fashion.
Tip ONE- Review your closet before shopping.
I have found that when I am shopping resale I get easily overwhelmed by the selection. There is literally only one of every item, going in and just trying to shop without a plan can leave you feeling overwhelmed and walking out the store with nothing. BUT going in with an idea of what you are looking for can help you to score resale gold. I like to make a couple of laps around the store before I head to the fitting room. That way I can take it all in AND really look for what I want to add to my closet.
I have been wanting to add more skirts for Fall to my wardrobe. By having a plan, and keeping my closet needs in mind I was able to score this jersey pleated skirt at HIPS for only 10 bucks!
When shopping resale its important to shop all the sizes in the store. When clothes have already been washed, or they are from a line you have never heard of you never know when an item in a smaller or bigger size might be a perfect fit. This tip goes hand in hand with tip one, if you find that your work wardrobe needs more skirts, don’t limit yourself to just shopping your size. Shopping all sizes in a store takes time, don’t shop in a hurry.
I am not a person that gets intimidated or upset when I need to size up or down, if I like it I will find a way to wear it. Plain and Simple. This type of logic is perfect for resale shopping, I took a chance and tried on this size 18 fall dress at HIPS. This is not my usual size, but ended up being a perfect fit!
This tip goes hand in hand with tip number two. Part of the fun of shopping resale is getting great items at an inexpensive price. This little detail leaves room for an alterations budget. If you find something that doesn’t fit but is a great price you can ALWAYS have it altered. Having clothing altered also helps to make a piece your own. Simple alterations range from 15-50 dollars depending on who you are working with.
Clothing that is mass produced is created with a fit models proportions, so when you buy clothing off the rack its never truly your exact measurements. For years that has been a fashionistas secret, getting your clothing altered for a custom fit. And when you shop resale, you are able to save money and get that perfect fit! I found this leopard skirt at HIPS, it was to big but I could easily have it altered for a perfect fit.
This week on Curls and Contours I wanted to share a post that I get questions about ALL THE TIME. This post is about “What I buy at Nordstrom” and how I shop smart at a major department store.
What do I shop for at Nordstrom?
I utilize Nordstrom for 2 areas of my wardrobe. Pants and Skincare. I do own tops/dresses/shoes from Nordstrom but their bottoms and skincare offerings have me coming back again and again.
I have to admit I am addicted to upscale denim, a few years ago I got into Paige jeans and the rest is history. I love a quality pair of jeans, and Nordstrom has a great online offering for Plus Size women. I purchase most if not all of my pants from Nordstrom because of their easy return policy, and their wide selection of super quality pieces. My favorite pant buys from Nordstrom are the Zella High Waist legging, and my Good American jeans. I wear my Zella leggings with EVERYTHING, from walking my dogs in the evening to dressing up for a night out. They are hands down the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. I think I own 4 pairs at this point(not included my printed ones LOL).
Here are my favorite Zella leggings right now, in plus and regular!!
I don’t talk a lot about my skin on the blog, and I would really like to change that. Let me tell you, my skin is THE WORST!!!! I have struggled for years with adult acne, and have quite a bit of scarring and pore issues. I am a faithful Nordstrom beauty counter girl, and here is why.
One day I was running some errands and happened to be in Nordstrom, at the time my skin was at an all time low, I had really dry patches, and a huge breakout of cystic acne along my jawline. Things were really really bad. I was stopped by an esthetician at the Clarins counter in Nordstrom, she wanted my to try her hand cream(which is amazing lol). We got to talking, and next thing I know she is giving me a mini facial and changing my life. I know that sounds crazy but its so beyond true. She talked me through why I was dry and patchy in areas and why my acne was out of control.
This Clarins esthetician explained to me that all the acne products that I was using on my skin was actually causing more acne because the oil in my skin could not balance out. She told me that instead of stripping my skin of oil and moisture, I needed to be adding moisture back to my skin(which at the time sounded like the craziest shit I had ever heard). She said that my skin cells were being stripped of all moisture every night and damaged by acne products, and that my body was sending lots of oil to my face because there wasn’t any. This is what was causing my breakouts, and the patchy dry areas were from the acne products.
I purchased a moisturizer from her that day, and she sent me home with samples of the rest of the Clarins line that she suggested for my skin. AND I was back in two weeks to buy it ALL. I started using the products that she sent me home with and within a week my skin was healing, and I honestly haven’t had a breakout since then. I have completely changed my skincare and makeup routine. I would still be living in adult acne hell if the Nordstrom Clarins esthetician hadn’t stopped me.
Here is the skincare that CHANGED MY LIFE!! From start to finish every night.
Shop with a purpose, its a big store and everything is gorgeous(its easy to go crazy LOL). GO in (online or in store) with what you are looking for in mind. I know that I love their pants and skincare, so when I am in need of those items I turn to Nordstrom.
It has been months since I have shared my weekend outfits!! During my workweek my clothes fall into the “Mom clothes” category, so on weekends and during my blog shoots I get to really play with my clothes! Today on the blog I am sharing 5 weekend outfits, and 4 things I am loving right now! Jacket | Leggings | Boots | Bag
The TV Show Ozark- Keith and I have been watching the Netflix original Ozark like crazy! We loved Breaking Bad, and this show has that same feel to it. A little dark, a little twisted but ultimately about a man that is willing to do anything for his family including break the law. We haven’t had “Cable” TV for years, its a money saver and we get plenty of entertainment from Netflix and Hulu!
2. Midcentury Industrial Home Decor- We are renovating our kitchen and I have become OBSESSED with home decor, its not something I share on the blog(I could, but I don’t think you are here for that lol). I am loving pretty much everything from West Elm, and have been doing a ton of research on concrete countertops and how to create an eclectic space that meshes old with new. If you have any home decor blogs that fit this criteria SEND THEM MY WAY!!
3. Low Heeled Booties- Last Fall I was all heeled booties ALL the time. I just could not get into the low heeled options. But this year, I have been super into what is being offered. I have two pairs that will be what I am wearing nonstop until December(when the real cold weather hits). Links HERE, and HERE for the exact pairs that I have been loving.
4. Cauliflower Mac and Cheese- Keith and I prefer to eat High Fat/Low Carb dinners, gluten in general is not really my friend. We both just feel better the next day when we follow this way of eating. I made some Cauliflower Mac and Cheese a couple of months ago and it has been a weekly meal since. We usually add extra veggies to the recipe, like onions and mushrooms and when Keith makes it he adds spices to make it hot!! Recipe link HERE
I am so excited to be collaborating with my blogger bestie/one of my real life besties Liz from the fabulous blog withwonderandwhimsy.com on a Fall Floral post with Avenue and Loralette. I have a few things I would like to cover in this post. I want to share one of Falls hottest trends, I want to introduce you to a new brand that I haven’t worn or shared with you guys yet, and I want to beg and plead with Liz to give me the Avenue top she is wearing for this post. I NEEEEEEDDDDD it in my life.
If you are an avid reader of my blog(thank you very much by the way) then you already know all about Loralette, because I was the first influencer to work with them! But if you are new here, then read all about my super fun Loralette collab HERE.
I am so so so in love with Avenue’s dresses for Fall! When I visited their Headquarters in June, I was able to see so much more of what they have planned! This floral maxi is just the tip of the iceberg. I picked this maxi specifically for the details, I love the cold shoulder and the double slits in front. The blousey fabric(a polyester blend) doesn’t cling and doesn’t wrinkle easily, which is perfect for me because I DONT iron. Like I don’t even own an iron.
Avenue is a plus size clothing brand founded in 1983 with the mission to provide the best fit for plus size women in the industry. The word on the street is that Avenue offers the BOMB DOT COM wide width shoes, and I love their dresses.
My booties are from Avenue as well! They are open on both sides and absolute perfection for these transitional months(no socks required). They are a faux suede and are less than 100 bucks! Currently as I write this post they are on sale for only 45.00! When I paired the booties with dress, I felt like a curvy Stevie Nicks(give me all the rocker gypsy clothes). The flowy dress, the heeled booties, obviously I rock her hair style already.
Liz paired her Avenue top(see photos below) with a pair of Loralette flare jeans and some Avenue booties. This fall floral top is a blousey polyester blend, with all the little details added in. Liz created balance by pairing the top with flare leg jeans, she adds interest by wearing an olive western inspired bootie from Avenue’s fall shoe collection.
Loralette has some super fun fall florals in their inventory, I wanted to feature a top that isn’t a color combo that I usually reach for, and while this top is super sheer, it gives me all the romantic, whimsical autumn vibes. This piece is definitely well suited for warmer climates or early September for us northern girls! I love love the sleeves, and the warm tone of the polyester blend fabric. I opted to style this top with skinnies and some mules, which honestly is a fall staple for me. I grabbed some statement earrings to pull the look together at the last minute, but just as easily could have gone accessory free. The statement sleeves on this top are a major attention getter, so keeping minimal accessories is easy. This is a sheer top, I would recommend a simple nude bralette underneath, and could see wearing this top out at night, to a local hotspot or my favorite martini bar.
Liz Styled her skinnies with a blue and pink floral cold shoulder top from Avenue, this top is a gorgeous knit fabric that can easily be dressed up or down. I love that she styled the look with some sassy patent pumps, and grey washed skinnies. This is a color combo for Fall that I wouldn’t easily think of, and I love that! The blue in the top is so rich and saturated, then with pops of pink flowers and little splashes of black this is a great piece for Fall with an unique color combo.
When dressing your curvy figure, go for balance.
Fitted top + Flared pants/skirt = Balance
Flowy top + Fitted pants/skirt = Balance
Ok, I promise I didn’t forget. LOL
Dear Liz, please give me the Avenue top you blogged about for this collab. I promise I will give it a great home and wear it ALL the time. hahahaha
