This week on the blog I am teaming up with Liz Louize to share how a trendy statement piece can dress up items you already own! I love being able to add things to my closet that will easily mix and match with my “old stuff” lol. To me this is just practical dressing and an integral part of my fashion personality. I scooped up this velvet and sequin bomber jacket the last time I was in Liz Louize, I knew it would be perfect for the holidays and would mix and match well with other pieces in my closet. The silhouette of this piece lends a very casual vibe, but the fabric and sequin sleeve kick things up a notch. Versatile pieces like this are great to have in your closet, and in my opinion if you can shop them from a boutique with a curated inventory you will be getting the most bang for your buck.
Obviously, if you have been following me for awhile then you KNOWWWW I love black dresses so my first thought was to style this jacket with a black dress. I pulled this one out of my closet and bada bing I had myself a brand new outfit. Liz Louize has quickly become my go to place for statement piece shopping, and luckily for me the store is in the area BUT if you aren’t local they have an online store TOO!
This jacket falls into the bomber category, it features black sequins on the arms and a quilted velvet across the front and back. I found that this piece fit true to size, I am wearing a 1. I will be styling this jacket again for a date night out, and I plan on pairing it with distressed denim and a black t-shirt for a casual look.
Style tip- Its easy to work in a flashy sequin piece when you go matchy matchy. If you have a sequin piece in mind that you like to style but aren’t sure about making a “statement” try pairing it with something that is the same color! I love black so I am always pairing statement pieces with dark shades, but this tip works great for any color!
Liz Louize has so many new arrivals AND you can shop them now online! If you are in need of a holiday look, or even a gift for the curvy babe in your life. You need to check out this store! I follow them on Facebook for up to date info on specials and discounts! I have found that keeping up with my favorite boutiques on social media is a great way to keep an eye on their inventory and know about current sales. You can check out the Liz Louize FacebookHERE.
This week on the blog I am sharing some November new arrivals from J. Jill, specifically outerwear with J.Jill style. I have a beautiful coat and woven top to share that are great as we move into winter, and the cooler months ahead.
J. Jill has so many options for the babe that enjoys luxe basics, they offer sizes in Misses, Petite, Plus and Tall. This is my first experience with J. Jill outerwear, and I really am impressed with the quality of the coat. I was nervous that the jacket would run small so I ordered a size up, and found that I should have gotten my true size. I styled the Chelsea coat with another new arrival the pleated back top. This look has that upscale luxe vibe that J. Jill is known for, the tunic pairs so easily with leggings, I opted to style the look with some over the knee boots to give the outfit a trendy edge.
Style Tip- Invest in a few basic coats that you can wear season after season, go for timeless shapes and fabrics that never go out of style. That way you can match you outerwear with what you are wearing for the day. Don’t know where to start? Go for a camel coat first. Then build your coat collection from there,
This is my second time featuring J Jill on the blog(click HERE for the first post) and I am seeing some similarities. Every piece that I have received is so easy to live in. Style is so important, but what is even more important is the ability to live in the clothing you wear. I need my clothes to be stylish and functional, this is ESPECIALLY important now that we are in an outerwear required situation. The Chelsea coat has so much style, from the color of the grey wool to the collar.
Before I wrap this post up, I wanted to touch on a super easy way to have the chicest outfit in the room. Grab some leggings, a white tunic top and some OTK boots. True to J.Jill style, this top is a total elevated basic, it flows off the body and doesn’t cling anywhere. Simple, chic and functional that is the way I want to dress everyday.

This week on the blog I am sharing two Thanksgiving looks from Loralette, one casual and one dressier! Everyone has different family traditions, some families have a formal affair on Thanksgiving and some a casual hanging in the kitchen vibe. Loralette offers the curvy babe options for both. And SHOES, if you have been here before then you know Avenue has the bessst shoes(link HERE).
Continuing on with my thankful series this month, I wanted to share a book that my husband and I read a couple of years ago. The book is called “The 5 Love Languages” this is a book we read a few years into our marriage and it has been something that we talk about and use as a reminder on the best ways to show love and thankfulness/appreciation to each other. This is how it works, you read the book and learn about the different love languages, then you take the quiz and find out what yours are. Your partner does the same. Then you know how you feel loved and appreciated the best, and you learn how your partner feels love and appreciated best.
The weather is turning here in Michigan, and my short dress/bare legs days are numbered. So I am soooaaaaakkkking it up as long as I can. I paired these rugged/glam OTK boots with a lace up floral mini, this burgundy dress feels distinctly fall and perfect for a harvest celebration like Thanksgiving. The heeled boots dress this look up and lend it a winter vibe.
In the fall one sure fire way to amp up the cozy factor is to add a a blanket scarf, I keep one in my car in the colder months that way I can be cozy at any moment! LOL I believe that in the fall and winter a plaid scarf is basically a neutral. 🙂
On the website this piece looks like it has a “Swing” shape, but really this piece is more of an A line silhouette. The top is meant to be fitted and then at the seam at the waist lets go into a fun A line skirt! This piece has an inner tank dress that is attached at the shoulders. This gives you some flexibility with how much chest you want to show.
These OTK boots are called the “Hunter Over the Knee” boot which I think is really fitting. When my I first tried them on my husband told me I looked like I was ready to go out in the woods. LOL. I have a 17.5″ calf and these were a perfect fit. The lacing adds a unique touch and I really like the distressed look. I would pair these with jeans and a long chunky knit cardigan for a casual look.
I love getting dressed up, but for most American families Thanksgiving is a casual affair. Every year I usually end up in jeggings and a flowy blouse(that way its easier to get seconds on stuffing and pie LOL). This blouse sold out before I could get this post up, but I will link up some similar blouses from Loralette.
I am wearing a 16 in these and per the usual the waistband is a bit big, but the legs are perfect. LOL. The day we photographed this look it was 40 degrees out, I had planned on wearing THESE with this look but the weather was not permitting. Loralette is the sister brand to Avenue, I have heard great things about Ave denim, and can say that Loralette does not disappoint in this area either. These jeans are trendy, and stretchy but still hold their shape. I shared another pair of Loralette denim HERE. These jeggings are meant to be cuffed and offer a 3 button detail at waistband, which makes the waistband wider and offers more coverage.
Do you dress up or down for Thanksgiving? Tell me in the comments below!

Velvet has been everywhere lately! There are so many different ways to bring some velvet into your wardrobe this season. I scooped this velvet cardigan up while shopping in Memphis in early October and I love the boho chic vibe. This cardigan is actually a blend two hot trends right now, velvet and embroidery. The back detail is so fun and really what caught my eye while I was shopping.
Whenever I travel I like to look up local boutiques to shop, so I can find unique things and meet new people. While I was in Memphis on family vacation I looked up a boutique that I have followed for years and never had the chance to visit! Pink Coconut Boutique is a trendy boutique that carries both regular and plus sizes along with accessories, shoes, bags and jewelry. I loved finding affordable pieces from Pink Coconut Boutique that are really unique, IN fact! A dress from PCB is the subject of the first blog post on Curls and Contours!
I styled this cardigan with a white lace up tee, ripped skinnies and my favorite and very worn booties. I wanted this look to have a distressed feel to it, so I played up the “western” vibe of the velvet with my favorite ripped skinnies and a distressed tee. I grabbed my favvvorrrrite clutch to add a little leopard to the mix. I wear so much black, its really refreshing to have a brown piece to mix in!
I want to style this cardigan again with more of a polished feel, I am thinking dark wash sleek skinnies, a white oxford shirt and some brown riding boots.
How is it October 30th already? I feel like it was September 1st yesterday, and here we are moving into November. This week I am kicking off my “Thankful” series. This November all of my posts will have a common theme, in each post this month I will be sharing my thoughts on thankfulness, this may be ideas on how to show others you are thankful to have them in your life, or just a quick blurb on something I am so thankful to have in my life.Today I am sharing a review of this Yours Clothing dress and boots.
Have you checked out Yours Clothing before? I LOVE sharing garments from YC on the blog, this UK based brand has SO MUCH stock and options for the curvy girl. There is literally something for everyone! To read more about YC on my blog click HERE, HERE or HERE.
Where are my girls with wide calves at? I am soon happy to share some fantastic OTK boots with you, these are a faux suede and they accommodate a wide calf(my calf is 17 inches and there is room to spare), I am 5’6″ and these come up well above my knee. I have worn them with dresses and leggings and they are a really subtle way to dip your toe into this trend. I love this trend especially for the colder months, I need coverage but I hate having to give up my short dresses thats where OTK boots come in. They look so chic, and give you that coverage that a ling dress or pant would provide. I am sharing the exact pair I am wearing but the stock is low right now, so I have linked a similar pair from YC below.
I was specifically looking for a dress that would be great for a dressier Thanksgiving/Holiday event to share, but the dress had some criteria it had to meet first. This Blue Vanilla Curve dress fit the bill perfectly. I loved this dress for holiday gatherings because it ISNT TIGHT. This swing style dress has a lot of style but girl you can eat in it and be comfortable. The deep V/choker neckline adds a some flirt to dress that flows away from the body for a universally flattering fit. The trendy shoulder detail keeps this piece current and on trend. The polyester/elastine blend fabric has a great weight to it, and some nice stretch. I also really love that this piece isn’t red, orange, brown or green. This is a dress for the girl that wants to look dressed up, comfortable, and loves darker colors and not the classic “holiday color palette”.
Do you follow Yours Clothing on Facebook? This is my favorite social channel to keep up with what YC is up to, I love seeing what stores are opening and their Face of YC contest!
I am so thankful to be able to share my fashion finds with my readers and followers, without you Curls and Contours wouldn’t be what it is. Two years ago when I first started Curls and Contours I took a leap of faith, I told myself that with enough ambition and grit I could create something that could help and inspire others. And today as we move into another holiday season, I am so thankful to have you all in my life. Thank you for stopping in at Curls and Contours. It means more than you know.
This post was sponsored by Yours Clothing, as always all opinions are my own.
This week on the blog I am sharing three fall dresses from SWAK Designs. I love being able to share new brands with you, especially brands that are made in the USA AND so size inclusive! SWAK offers a size range from 1 to 6!! All the curvy babes can wear SWAK, they offer a multitude of styles and are always coming out with different silhouettes and patterns.
The first dress that I am sharing is the Heather Wrap Maxi dress, this woven maxi is a true wrap style you untie it it under the bust and take take it off or on like a jacket or button down shirt. This gives the dress so much versatility, and allows you to create a custom fit. This dress is 100% polyester, so its super light, and anti wrinkle. I am wearing the 1, and found that the bust was a little big. I am not a girl that layers cami’s under outfits, you could easily solve the big bust area with a cami or with a little pin under the ruffle. Something fun and different about this piece is that the large ruffle around the neckline actually serves as the sleeve as well, I like this in particular because that means the dress will layer seamlessly under a jacket. You can just pull the ruffle up and add a jacket without any sleeve lines.
Style Tip – When working with a dress with an all over print keep your accessories simple and subtle. To keep the pattern of the garment from overwhelming your frame go with classic accessories that streamline your look.
The Kelly Tunic dress in the burgundy floral really is the quintessential fall print. I opted to style this tunic length dress with some over the knee boots but just as easily could have paired this look with leggings and booties. This rayon/spandex blend is super soft to the touch and cozy. SWAK designed this piece with a sharkbite hem and a swing silhouette, this creates a fun sway when you walk because the fabric flows away from the body. I opted to wear this piece off the shoulder, but if you are looking for a little more coverage you could wear this piece on the shoulder with a jean jacket!
The last SWAK dress I am sharing is the Lynette maxi in the geo print. This dress is soo versatile! The lightweight rayon/spandex knit fabric makes this piece great for now with some light layers and later on its own as a standalone piece. I styled this fun dress with a jean jacket and some fringe booties for Fall, but this dress will be in my bag headed to Florida as a bathing suit cover up/casual night out dress this December. I am such a sucker for a tribal print dress(and tribal print in general), I find the pattern refreshing and the monochrome is so easy to style. Per the usual, I paired my favortite leopard clutch with this dress its a neutral right? LOL
Check out SWAK’s fall lookbook HERE, and let me know what your favorite style is?
My love affair with little black dresses continues…In this Monday’s blog post I am sharing a new little black dress from Kiyonna. The Ciara Cinch dress by Kiyonna is a faux wrap style dress with a unique inset that creates a ruching under the bust that is flattering and attracts the eye. The fabric is a thick polyester/spandex blend that helps keep everything in place, I also found that this piece was breathable and very comfortable. The deep v-neck was very secure and comfortable, I never felt like any of my bits were hanging out or moving when they shouldn’t be LOL.
I was initially attracted to this Kiyonna piece because of the color and pattern, I love a good black dress, and this pattern felt like a great way to add some diversity to my closet. Once I had the piece on it was the fit and flattering ruching that won me over. If you have been following me for a bit then you know I am not a girl that is afraid of a tight dress for a night out, but in my day to day life I opt for comfortable luxe basics that are not fitted. I really enjoyed how this dress drew attention to my small waist but didn’t hug the rest of my body, it felt like the perfect blend of fitted and flowy. The cinched waist showed off my hourglass figure but the “faux wrap” piece across the front made me feel confident that my tummy wasn’t showing. I could see myself wearing this dress out for a few different occasions, not just a night out on the town.
I dressed the Ciara Cinch up for a date night out, with some strap heels and a tassle earring but I could also see myself pairing it with wedge booties, a cami and a long cardigan for a work ready look. I know I am always going on about the versatility of Kiyonna’s pieces but IT REALLY IS TRUE! When you have a quality garment, the styling options become endless.
Kiyonna offers this dress in multiple color and pattern options, they always seem to have this silhouette in stock because IT WORKS for curvy bodies. I scooped it up in the dot mix print, it is also available in a pressed flowers pattern, and a misty blue color. It seems that there is something for everyone with the Ciara Cinch dress!
Where my curvy babes at? I have a question for you.
When was the last time you slipped into a smart, structured dress and went off to work? I found myself contemplating this, as a plus size person why are my only options flowy and wide leg pants when I am looking to dress professional? This week on the blog I am so pleased to share three smart structured dresses perfect for your next professional outing.
In my last Liz Louize post I shared the benefits of boutique shopping(you can find that post HERE). On my visit to Liz Louize I got to chatting with the owners of the boutique(Hey Amy and Amanda!) about quality professional outfits for the plus size woman. We all felt that curvy babes in the workplace miss out on the variety of options their regular size counterparts have access to. Liz Louize happens to keep a variety of unique work ready options in stock!
It always seems to be the same outfit formula for plus size ladies- wide leg slacks, flowy top, and some sort of blazer or cardigan. And don’t get me wrong this is cute and easy, but the variety is missing. So today on the blog I am sharing my three favorite work ready dresses from Liz Louize. Lets break out of that mold and try something different!
This dress is a thick knit fabric that has a good amount of stretch. I wanted to share this dress specifically because of the fit, its so comfortable but looks so put together. The belt comes with the dress and really adds some shape and interest to the dress. I opted to pair this garment with a simple black cardigan to add an extra layer of warmth. I would love to style this dress with black tights and a blazer for a cool weather look.
I picked this piece out immediately while shopping around Liz Louize, I love the classic color and details on this dress. This garment felt perfectly tailored for a day at work and then with a simple change of accessories an evening out. I would style this with a blazer and pumps for the office, and then a leather jacket and some over the knee boots for after work drinks with the girls. When we shot this look, I joked that this dress had a definite “Jackie O” feel all I need is a pillbox hat, some gloves and black sunglasses to complete the look!
The last dress that I styled from Liz Louize is this black and white shimmer sheath dress. I grabbed up a red blazer to add some color, and I think it really makes the whole look pop. The red blazer lends this look a holiday feel, swapping out the red for a black topper would keep this firmly in the “It’s October not December” lane.
What do you like to wear to work? Are you a slacks and blouse girl or a dress girl?
There are so many reasons to celebrate the fall season, here in Michigan as the days turn colder and the nights grow longer it almost feels bittersweet. Like we all know what is coming, the COLDDDD weather is coming and its now its our job to get out and enjoy every bit of nice weather left to soak up. So! I teamed up with Lane Bryant to share my favorite Fall date day/night spots here in Michigan and a couple of ultra chic outfits. A little bit educational, a little bit fashionable this post has been so fun to put together.
Lets get started.
HANDS DOWN my favorite day date in the fall is to tour the Pioneer Wine Trail. This is a driving tour of nine wineries(we never make it to all nine LOL). We like to go and have a tasting and snack at each winery and then purchase a bottle from each location, this stocks our cellar for a few months and each bottle has a memory to go with it. The wineries are all located around and between Jackson and Tecumseh MI, we opt to take the back roads and enjoy the colorful foliage.
When Keith and I were first married(in the fall) we toured the Pioneer Wine Trail for our first anniversary. We purchased a bottle of wine from the last winery and decided to save it for our 10 year wedding anniversary. At the time it felt like a lifetime away, and this year we celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. We joked that we will be drinking that bottle in no time, and how funny it was that time has passed so quickly when we truly thought it would take forever. 🙂
My favorite outfit combination for a day full of fall themed outdoor activities is simple. Jeans, cute blouse, adorable outerwear, comfortable shoes. You are guaranteed to be comfortable, super cute and able to move about with ease. Lane Bryant just recently released their new line of super stretch skinny jeans that are so trendy, they have so many styles to choose from and they totally got in on the distressing game. Which is so exciting, plus size women need more easily accessible fashionable items Lane Bryant really went above and beyond with their skinny jeans.
Fit tip- these skinnies run a tad long(I’m 5′ 6″), and with the nature of distressing each pair is a little different from the next. Go to the store and try these on, the SA’s there will be able to help you get the right fit. I own two pairs, the ones in this photo are a 14 and the other pair I have are a 16.
Statement sleeves are all the rage right now, this one stands out from the rest for a couple of reasons. The stretchy fabric and the versatility. This kind of top is one that gets so much wear, its perfect for a day date touring wineries or tucked into a skirt at the office. I have been stalking this military inspired vest since I first noticed it on the website, I love the olive color and the soft sweater knit. Dusters have become increasingly popular these past few seasons and this year they are still popping up on almost every brands Fall/Winter rollout.
Style Tip – When styling a knee length or longer topper really consider the proportions of the rest of your outfit. Often times garments that go past your knee can have a “drowning effect” on the person wearing them. My trick is to always pair a long topper with a fitted pant and a heel. This gives me height and helps my shape to still show through.
When the weather starts to turn I want to be cozy. I find myself pulling out all my comfy knit leggings and soft blankets at home, but that look doesn’t necessarily translate to a fun date night look. For my date night look I wanted to share a twist on the usual sweater and riding boots look that so many women fall prey to this time of year.
My favorite date night spot in the fall is a restaurant that offers patio seating with fire places or open fire pits. Keith and I frequent a local brewery that has the best biergarten, we usually dine somewhere within walking distance and then enjoy an evening stroll over to the brewery to enjoy a pint and cozying up by there fire places on the patio. This is a social place, we love meeting new people by the fireside and just enjoying the romance of a fall evening.
I styled this tie sleeve sweater with a merlot pleated skirt and my favorite block heeled sandals. I love how cozy this sweater is, the skirt lends this whole look a feminine ultra chic feel, and the heels amp up the sexy factor without having to show a ton of skin. I am a big fan of heavy and light fabric working together, I think it creates a really chic balanced look that women usually don’t go for.
Fit Tip – Its all about balance when playing with heavier knits and silky polyester blends. You want the look to have that cozy feel but you don’t want to get lost in the fabric, don’t be afraid to size up or down to achieve the desired look. When I first pulled this outfit at Lane Bryant I had my sizes opposite. I pulled a size up in the sweater and my usual size in the skirt. After working with the stylists and playing for a bit I ended up leaving the store with a size up in the skirt, and my regular size in the sweater.
The sleeve detail on this sweater is adjustable, which I really appreciate. This sweater just went from something for date night or the weekends, to a piece that I can adjust and wear to work with slacks or skinny pants. I am not a under tank layering girl, so I didn’t add a layer between my bra and this sweater. It doesn’t bother me that my bra shows through a touch. To make this sweater more versatile you can always add a tank between the sweater and your bra.
Guys…..this is my third pleated skirt, each one is a little different so its not a hoarding issue right? LOL pleated skirts have been a part of a chic girls closet arsenal for years, but just recently have been popping up in ALL THE FUN COLORS AND FABRICS. I love the fall feel that this one has, and its so easy to wear(no spanx needed). Lane Bryant is offering this skirt in both merlot and black, the polyester blend lets this skirt stay super light and versatile.
Style Tip – Pleated skirts are being offered in a variety of fabrics and patterns this year, as the weather get colder don’t be afraid to add fun tights and booties. This type of skirt is so versatile that you can really play up your accessories to create a unique look.
What is something you love doing in the fall before the weather gets to chilly? Let me know in the comments below!
When Liz and I were in NYC this past June we toured the Avenue headquarters, there we were able to get a sneak peak at what Ave was planning for fall. Thats when I found this beauty! I have been patiently waiting for this dress to get in at Avenue and it finally haaasssss!! You know me, I am a sucker for a little black dress and while that is easy and fun it can get a little mundane. For that reason I have been trying to work more patterned pieces into my wardrobe, this dress is great for that, it definitely gives off that dark vibe that I love, but is also fun for fall and on trend with the sleeve detail.
Why this dress has all the ingredients for success this fall
Statement sleeves- this fall statement sleeves are SOOOO INNN, this dress is 3/4 sleeve with flared lace detail.
Dark Florals – the black base of this print lets this dress be great for September and for November, more about dark florals HERE
The Silhouette – this piece features a fitted bodice and a breezy rayon blend skirt, what I love about this silhouette is the ease of wear, no additional restricting undergarments needed.
With the above the knee hemline and the fun print, I am going to give this dress the weekend seal of approval. Perfect for an Autumn day bopping around town.
When wearing a busy print keep accessories simple and minimal. Always think about what part of your look you want to highlight, then accessorize with that in mind. Example- I wanted to highlight the fun print and lace sleeve of this dress, so I left my bracelets at home for the day. I don’t have bracelets fighting with the lace(getting caught in the delicate fabric) and I paired some simple black booties with the look so that the fun pattern can really shine through.
Other ways to style
As the weather continues to cool down, I would love to style this dress with a black duster vest, tights, and some boho chic booties. With the free spririt vibe this piece gives off, I would stray away from a structured riding boot.
How would you style this dress? Would you take it a little more structured or let your bohemian flag fly like I did?
